Ko so bili tape-echo standard v glasbenem svetu, je bil legendarni RE-201 vodilni v svojem razredu. Opremljen s tremi enakomerno razporejenimi glavami in spring reverbom, je lahko proizvedel vse od čistih, posameznega echo efekta do ritmičnih delay zank in ambientalnega prostorkega efekta. Na osvajajoč zvok RE-201 so vplivali številni dejavniki, od tople kompresije magnetnega traku do razvijajoče se modulacije, ki jo povzročajo nihanja hitrosti motorja traku, popačenja in drugi elementi. Nenazadnje je bilo vezje analognega predojačevalnika ključna sestavina bogatega zvočnega recepta Space Echo.
Pri razvoju Boss RE-2 in njegove večje različice RE-202 so inženirji pri BOSS v celoti reproducirali vsa zapletena, nelinearna delovanja, ki prispevajo k nesmrtnemu značaju legendarnega RE-201. Skrbno so analizirali več starinskih RE-201, vključno z neokrnjeno originalno enoto iz tovarniškega arhiva BOSS in Roland. Vse, kar vpliva na zvok Boss RE-2, je bilo simulirano s povsem novimi algoritmi, vključno s potjo traku, mehanizmom snemanja/predvajanja, različicami motorja, obarvanostjo predojačevalnika, značajem spring reverba in še več.

When tape-based echoes were standard in the music world, the RE-201 was a leader in its class. Equipped with three evenly spaced tape heads and a spring reverb tank, it could produce everything from clean, single delays to dense, rhythmic echoes and ambient washes. The RE-201’s appealing sound was influenced by many factors, from the warm compression of magnetic tape saturation to the evolving modulation produced by motor speed fluctuations, friction, and other elements. Last but not least, analog preamp circuitry was a key ingredient in the Space Echo’s rich sonic recipe.
In developing the RE-2 and its big brother, the RE-202, BOSS engineers have fully reproduced all the complex, non-linear behaviors that contribute to the RE-201’s immortal character. Carefully analyzed several vintage RE-201s, including a pristine original unit from the BOSS and Roland factory archive. Everything that influences the sound has been recreated with all-new algorithms, including the tape path, record/playback mechanism, motor variations, preamp coloration, spring reverb character, and more.
